Chefs in Lockdown - when the restaurant world stood still A photographic portrait series by John Carey

Each book sold generates a donation for the Burnt Chef Project.

A new photographic portrait series featuring some of England’s best chefs in a limited edition book, Chefs in Lockdown - when the restaurant world stood still.

Photographer John Carey, whose professional career has focused on working with some of the best names in the hospitality industry, shot over 180 chefs to produce the thought-provoking, deeply personal depictions of how their restaurant businesses and livelihoods were impacted as a result of the national lockdown. The book was published on 20th March, the fifth anniversary of the date that the global pandemic shuttered restaurants across the country.

Chefs featured in the book span young, independent talent to iconic culinary legends including: Angela Hartnett, Raymond Blanc, Tom Kerridge, Clare Smyth, James Martin, Thomasina Miers, Sally Clarke, Jason Atherton,Sat Bains and John Williams; alongside words and quotes from industry legends such as Jamie Oliver, Gordon Ramsay, Pierre Koffman, Giles Coren and Tom Parker-Bowles. Shot in black & white, to reflect “the colour being drained from restaurants” , each image captures the chef in his or her restaurant exactly as John found it; often boarded up, with plates and glassware gathering dust and chairs piled high.
